When Might a Dental Implant Restoration Be Recommended?

Your dentist might recommend a dental implant restoration if you are missing a tooth. Implants are artificial teeth roots that are surgically attached to the jaw. They replace lost roots, preserving the bone tissue loss that takes place when a tooth falls out.

Reasons a dentist might recommend a dental implant restoration

Here are some of the reasons a dentist might suggest getting a dental implant restoration:

A knocked-out tooth

A knocked-out tooth can be reattached by a dentist if the patient gets to the clinic within a few hours after the injury occurs. However, that might not be an option if the tooth broke into multiple pieces due to the damage. When that is the case, a dentist might recommend replacing the tooth with an oral restoration like an implant. These are the next best thing to real teeth and they prevent the bone tissue loss that takes place after one or more teeth fall out.

The implant is inserted into the socket of the knocked-out tooth and it fuses with tissues around it. The implant is fitted with a crown to replace the lost tooth. The patient gets an artificial tooth that does not require any special cleaning or maintenance.

A severely decayed tooth

Tooth decay wreaks havoc on teeth. It can lead to a tooth breaking apart to the point it can no longer be fitted with a crown. A dentist might recommend fixing this by extracting the tooth so it can be replaced with a dental implant.

An infected tooth

Root canals are the standard way to fix an infected tooth. Tooth infections can spread to other parts of the body when left untreated. The bacteria can reach vital parts of the body like the brain and heart and the consequences of that can be life-threatening.

If a dentist thinks an infected tooth is at risk of spreading to other parts of the body, an extraction might be recommended instead of a root canal. The extracted tooth is then replaced with an implant.

A failed root canal

While it is extremely rare for root canal treatments to fail, there is a small percentage of that occurring over time. Dentists can perform follow-up root canals to address the issue or an extraction might be recommended. The tooth can then be replaced with an implant.

The dental implant restoration process

Anesthetics are administered during implant surgery. A cut is made into the patient’s gum and a hole is drilled into the jaw. The implant is pushed into the hole until it is held in place by bone tissues around it. It fuses with bone tissues around it via osseointegration over the next six months.

An abutment is then attached to the implant and it serves as a base for the implant crown.
