What Can I Expect If I Have Not Seen a General Dentist in Years?

General Dentist Hutto, TX If you have not been to the general dentist in more than a year, then you may have anxiety about what to expect during your visit. You can rest assured that the first visit is not invasive. This review highlights what is likely to take place during your first checkup if you have not been to the general dentist in more than a year.

How a general dentist visit works if you have not been in years

During a check-up visit with a general dentist, a patient can expect an oral examination, dental X-rays and a routine cleaning. If more extensive treatment is necessary, a scaling and root planing and dental fillings may be performed. Of course, however, each treatment plan is personalized for every patient.

Oral examination

An oral examination is a simple procedure that involves the dentist looking at the patient’s mouth to determine if there are any oral health concerns, such as weakened enamel, dental cavities and periodontal disease. It is a non-invasive process and is cost-effective.

Dental X-rays

Patients do not require dental X-rays on every dental visit, but for patients who have not visited the general dentist in over a year, dental x-rays are most likely required. This allows the dentist to notice any changes in the patient’s oral health, such as bone loss in the jaw, dental abscess and the status of wisdom teeth.

Routine cleaning

Patients who have not visited the dentist in a couple of years likely have an excessive build-up of plaque and tartar, which can develop regardless of good oral care. The general dentist typically recommends that the patient receive a routine dental cleaning to remove the plaque and tartar from along the gum line and the surface of teeth.

Scaling and root planing (if necessary)

For patients who have periodontitis (a severe type of periodontal disease), scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) is likely more beneficial than routine cleaning. This involves cleaning below the gum line to remove plaque and bacteria and start the process to improve periodontal health.

Dental filling

A dental filling addresses dental cavities, which often exist in patients who have not visited the dentist in more than a year. A cavity occurs when enamel erosion puts a small hole in the tooth. Dental fillings are not invasive and only take an hour or less to complete.

Schedule a follow-up visit

The last thing that the dentist will do is schedule a follow-up visit. This will either be for additional treatment if necessary or for a check-up visit four to six months later.
