Tooth Restoration Options: CEREC® Crowns

crowns Hutto, TX

CEREC® crowns give you a more convenient and time-efficient way to have your teeth restored. The traditional way of getting a crown involves making multiple trips to the dentist. This can be a major inconvenience for people with busy schedules.

Restoring teeth with CEREC® crowns

Crowns are popular restorations that can be used to fix a wide range of problems. These restorations can be used to restore the appearance and bite function of teeth. Crowns also protect teeth against the pressure and forces generated when chewing. CEREC® crowns can be used to fix issues like:

  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Discolored teeth
  • Short teeth
  • Spaces between teeth
  • Decayed teeth

The conventional way of getting a crown requires two trips to the dentist. During the first trip, the dentist prepares the patient's tooth for the restoration by removing portions of enamel from all sides of the tooth. This creates space for a better fit with the crown.

The dentist will then take an impression of the prepared tooth or use digital images to create a 3D model of it. A temporary crown is placed on the tooth and the model of it is sent to a dental lab that makes restorations like crowns. It can take up to two weeks for the patient's customized crown to get back to the dentist. When that occurs, the patient is called back in for a second appointment. The temporary crown is taken off and the patient's custom crown is installed.

The CEREC® process

Getting a CEREC® crown is a lot like getting a traditional crown minus the two-week waiting period and having to make two trips to the dentist. During the appointment, the dentist prepares the patient's tooth for a crown and makes a 3D model of their tooth. The data is transferred to a screen and the dentist uses CEREC® software to design the patient's crown. The crown is color-matched with the rest of the patient's teeth so it blends in when installed.

Once the dentist and patient are satisfied with what the crown will look like, the data is sent to a CEREC® machine that creates the restoration from a solid ceramic block. The machine works similarly to the way a 3D printer works. It takes the machine about 20 minutes to make a restoration so the patient waits in the dental chair while their crown is being made. They leave the clinic with their customized crown installed and their smile restored.

Benefits of CEREC® crowns

Here are some of the reasons why a growing number of people are choosing CEREC® crowns over conventional alternatives:

  • Completed during a single visit
  • The patient gets a natural-looking CEREC crown
  • Eliminates the need for a messy impression
  • The patient gets to give their input during the design process
