A full mouth reconstruction can provide patients with a healthy set of teeth that improves their overall appearance. The term refers to a combination of treatments that are performed to rebuild and restore the function of damaged teeth. The process of a full mouth reconstruction varies for each patient based on their unique circumstances. When the process is complete, the patient should have a healthy set of teeth that they are happy to show off.

Popular treatments used for full mouth reconstructions

Below are some of the treatments a dentist might perform during a full mouth reconstruction:

1. Crowns

These are versatile tooth-shaped oral restorations that are used to fix a variety of issues like severely decayed or damaged teeth. Also known as caps, dental crowns completely cover up the teeth they are protecting and they prevent oral bacteria and acids from getting to it. A crown also restores the function of a damaged tooth.

The process of getting a crown often involves two trips to the dentist and the removal of enamel. Enamel is shaved off before crowning a tooth to create a better fit with the restoration. An anesthetic is typically administered before removing portions of the enamel to numb the area.

2. Dental implants

Implants are another popular treatment during a full mouth reconstruction. They are restorations that are surgically placed in the jaw to replace missing teeth. It helps to hinder the bone tissue breakdown that occurs when a tooth is lost. Roots come out with missing teeth so the jawbone no longer gets the stimulation it needs to remain healthy. As a result, a person’s facial appearance begins to change.

Getting implants can help to prevent this bone tissue loss. However, not all patients are eligible for implants. People with health conditions like a weakened immune system or diabetes might not be eligible since their ability to recover from oral surgery is limited.

3. Dentures

Dentures are the most cost-effective way to go about replacing missing teeth during a full mouth reconstruction. These oral restorations consist of a framework that rests on the wearer’s gums, which keeps the prosthetic in place. Additionally, there are artificial teeth attached to the framework.

To get a patient a customized set of dentures, the dentist has them bite down on a mold to get an impression of their mouth. The impression is sent to a dental technician’s lab where dentures and other prosthetics are made. It takes about two weeks for the patient’s customized dentures to be ready.

4. Bridges

Dental bridges can also be included as part of a full mouth reconstruction. The restoration does exactly what its name suggests, it closes gaps in a person’s smile with artificial teeth. Bridges are typically anchored to the two teeth closest to the gap on both sides. These devices can be permanently fixed in place or removable.
